- Mediterranean Transpac 52 Regatta
Support
Sailing Weather Service completed a very
successful season assisting the top boats during the 2007
Mediterranean Transpac 52 Season. For the
overall Brietling MedCup championship, 5 of the top 6 teams
(including the top 3 teams) were supported with Sailing
Weather Service custom forecasts, high resolution weather modeling,
and pre-race consultations. At the 2007 TP52 Global
Championship, the top 4
teams received Sailing
Weather Services premiere forecast services. Attention is now focused on the 2008 season with an active program of design, weather analysis,
and local knowledge development for this year's racing venues.
Sailing Weather Service's Jennifer Lilly supported the US
Sailing Team's hunt for 2008 gold. She provided weather forecasting
and training to the entire Sailing Team at the 2006 and
2007 Pre-games events in Qingdao, China. Listen to Jennifer
report on her work at the 2006 Good Luck Beijing regatta here. Jennifer continued to provide
forecasting services for US Sailing Team members in events leading up to
the 2008 sailing competition and the 2008 games, held in the new Qingdao International Marina. Sailing Weather Service's custom weather modeling has been
combined with high-resolution current modeling to provide a complete training and preparation
solution to the US Sailing
Team.
Sailing Weather Service's Chris Bedford is Team Meteorologist for 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race challenger Ericsson Racing. The around-the-world race will take the team to Europe, South Africa, Asia, Brazil, and the USA. The team is trained out of Puerto Calero on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, off Africa's northwest coast.
Using proprietary techniques, yacht performance prediction and analysis can be performed over any race course or racing venue in the world. Sailing Weather Service maintains a 30-year historical wind data base for historic race simulation and analysis. For around-the-buoys and near coastal race analysis, high resolution models are used retrospectively to develop statistics of past weather in locations where observed data is scarce. Analyses currently in progress include Volvo Ocean Race, Newport-Bermuda, GP42 European Venues, TP52 Global venues, and many others.
Sailing Weather Service provides forecasts
free of charge for major events through a sponsorship with North Sails.
